Country-Level Data

Version 1

This is the first version of the figure, it lacks color and nuance so isn’t useful for telling the story.

Version 2

Adding color definitely helped clarify the differences between each of these measures of teacher workload, but it isn’t colorblind friendly, nor is it as nice as it can be.

Regret Becoming a Teacher

Row

Final Version

This figure describes the amount of regret teachers feel about choosing to pursue teaching as their primary career. Interestingly, the data are truncated such that the majority of our values fall between 1.4 and 1.8. It is important to note this, as the scale was a 1-5 scale, so while there appears to be diversity in the globe, it actually is due to a limited range in our data. I added the viridis plasma continuous fill to offer increased contrast in the color.

Version 1

The first version of this figure worked well in that it mapped the correct data on the correct country, but was unsuccessful in being particularly enjoyable to read, or having any useful inferences.

Version 2

In version two, I made several key adjustments to the plot, adding color and applying to a map friendly and moving th legend to the bottom of the figure to maximize space.

Salary Change Over Time

Row

Salary

Salary changes as documented by the department of labor statistics, documenting the changes in teacher salary between 1999 and 2016. All salary estimates were adjusted for inflation (i.e. all were put in 2016 dollars). One limitation of this visualization as it currently stands is that it lacks nuance for cost of living.

Version 1

This visual is a MESS! It’s nearly totally unreadable and unuseful and gives no useful information. Major revisions necessary. I don’t even recall how I made this plot originally, but for the final assignment I reverse engineered it to show the starting place.

Version 2

This is another really rough version of the plot. I like that it’s showing change over time, but the color breakdown is totally unusable!
